The house
Blank is the space before the word.
Blank started in Cairo in 2021 with one pattern and two bolts of cloth. We wanted modest wear that did not shout, that could be worn to work and to dinner, and that would still look right in five years. The name is a promise: we leave room for the woman wearing it.
The atelier
Every piece is cut and sewn by eight people in one room in Maadi.
We buy cloth in small lots from mills in Turkey and Egypt, sample every colour on the body before it goes into a run, and finish seams by hand where a machine would show. Runs are forty to sixty pieces. When a colour sells through it is gone until the next lot of cloth arrives.
